This extension offers integration with Free Download Manager (FDM). By default the toolbar icon is disabled. In this mode, downloads are handled by the internal download manager. Once the extension is enabled from the toolbar button (when the icon is colorful), then an observer is installed. This observer monitors new downloads and sends requests to FDM and cancels the built-in download. For the extension to work you need to have Free Download Manager (FDM) installed; 2.
For the extension to be able to communicate with FDM, a small native client is required. This native client can be found at.
You will get the instruction on how to install this native client when extension tries to communicate for the first time. For more info please visit: Rate your experience.
Download Manager (S3) Firefox add-on previously known as ‘ S3 Download Statusbar‘ hosted on AMO and available till yesterday, has been pulled down by Mozilla after spying concerns reported on reddit. After installing the latest update to the add-on, the extension has started asking users to help financially by giving permission to show ads, if the user gives consent, ads will appear on all web pages in Firefox browser and the browsing history of user can be accessed by third-party ad network, which the add-on developer has clearly stated in the privacy policy. Mozilla pulls Download Manager (S3) add-on from AMO after Spying Concerns We should note that ads are not enabled by default or forced on users.
Here the developer asking the users through add-on to enable ads to help him could be a policy violation. Mozilla has removed the Download manger (s3) add-on from the AMO. This is how Mozilla employee reacted to this on,”oshit, that’s not good.
Following up internally. Update: Behavior confirmed. We’ll be pulling the add-on in just a moment and following up with the author.”. He followed up saying to a question why the add-on was not detected with such behavior during AMO review process ” reviewers are humans, and we missed a policy violation in the latest update to this add-on. We’ve completed a preliminary audit of all AMO add-ons and found one similar case. It, too, has been deactivated.” The add-on developer has few more add-ons on AMO, of which, S3 Google Transalator is popular and has more number of users. If you’ve installed the add-on, remove it and either stick with or switch to alternative add-on:.
UPDATE: The add-on has been restored, check Download Manager (S3) add-on’s developerfor more information. I’m sure it’s a temporary move by Mozilla to help assuage the sudden fear outbreak by the redit topic post that told people it’s spyware. These are great addons I use, I’m sure they will work with the author and bring it back so we don’t have fear like we saw in that reddit topic. I think the reaction by that Mozilla Employee was honest, and down to earth, as if he was user himself.
I appreciate that. He understands the fear that comes with that ad technology. Oleksandr October 27, 2015 @ 4:47 pm.
I was in touch with advertising network, and have received the following answer: “Sending the content of the site was needed in order to make the in-text advertisement work. At no point of time we were planning to spy on someone or steal info. The html code itself was sent to our cloud servers in order to decrease load on a user’s end. Once content was received, our algorithm analyzed and picked up certain phrases and inserted in text lines on original websites. After analysis all info was deleted from our cloud and never used later on. Nevertheless, in order to follow the needs of Oleksandr Popov and the requirements of FireFox AMO, and also in order to avoid this problem for other partners, the following feature was turned off for now. In the nearest future the tool would be changed so, that most operations would be done on client side.” From my side I would like to add, that I was a bit confused with such a behavior of users using my app for such a long time, and I do understand that the fear and suspiciousness of several users, has led to the fact that 100k+ users were not able to use add-on they like and need.
On other hand I do understand that nowadays people are really afraid that personal information might be stolen. Having these thoughts I have contacted advertizing company and the following feature was turned off so that the whole html won’t be sent anywhere any longer. Fortunately all misunderstandings were solved, my add-on is active again and ready to be installed and used by users.
